The Best Dog Friendly Beaches in the UK

There is nothing quite like the joy of watching your furry best friend sprint across a vast expanse of sand, splash in the crashing waves, and sniff out new coastal trails. If you are planning a seaside getaway or a weekend day trip, finding the perfect dog friendly beach is absolutely essential for a stress-free adventure.

To help you plan your next coastal escape, we have rounded up five of the best dog friendly beaches across the UK. From our local Norfolk shores to the dramatic coastlines of Cornwall and Northumberland, here is your ultimate guide to a tail-wagging day out.

1. Holkham, Norfolk

As a proudly Norfolk-based business, we couldn't start our list anywhere else. Holkham is frequently voted one of the best beaches in the UK, and it is incredibly easy to see why. With miles of unspoilt golden sand backed by fragrant pine forests, it is a true paradise for pups.

  • Dog Restrictions: Holkham is incredibly welcoming, but it is also a vital nature reserve. From 1st April to 31st August, a strict dogs-on-leads policy applies in clearly signposted ground-nesting bird areas. The rest of the vast beach remains entirely open for off-lead zoomies.
  • Best Time to Go: Early morning. The tide goes out incredibly far, leaving massive shallow pools perfect for confident swimmers and splashers. It is also much quieter before the midday crowds arrive.
  • Car Park: Lady Anne’s Drive, Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, NR23 1RJ.
  • Nearby Facilities: At the top of the car park, you will find The Lookout, a fantastic eco-cafe that happily welcomes dogs and serves excellent coffee. Afterwards, take a stroll through the breathtaking grounds of nearby Holkham Hall (dogs must be kept on leads).

2. Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula, Wales

If you are searching for a breathtaking dog friendly beach in Wales, Rhossili Bay is virtually unmatched. Offering three miles of pristine sandy shores and dramatic cliff views, it is a sprawling playground for energetic dogs.

  • Dog Restrictions: There are zero restrictions! Rhossili Bay is 100% dog friendly.
  • Best Time to Go: Late afternoon. The sunsets over the iconic Worm's Head are world-class, providing a stunning backdrop for your evening dog walk.
  • Car Park: National Trust Car Park, Rhossili, Swansea, SA3 1PR.
  • Nearby Facilities: The View cafe in Rhossili village offers spectacular coastal panoramas and is very dog friendly. For a post-run adventure, walk the coastal path towards Worm's Head—just be sure to check the tide times carefully so you do not get stranded!

3. Bamburgh Castle Beach, Northumberland

For a coastal walk steeped in history and natural beauty, Northumberland’s Bamburgh Castle Beach is a must-visit. The majestic Bamburgh Castle looms over the sand dunes, offering one of the most dramatic beach landscapes in the UK.

  • Dog Restrictions: This is another magnificent place that welcomes dogs all year round with no sectioned-off areas or seasonal bans. Your dog can roam freely along the miles of white sand.
  • Best Time to Go: Early morning is magical here. The sea mist often rolls in around the castle, creating a stunning atmosphere, and you will likely have it mostly to yourself.
  • Car Park: Links Road Car Park, Bamburgh, NE69 7BJ.
  • Nearby Facilities: Head into the picturesque Bamburgh village and visit The Copper Kettle tearoom, which offers outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. You can also explore the grounds of Bamburgh Castle itself, which allows well-behaved dogs on leads within the fortress walls.

4. Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall

Cornwall is famous for its surfing scene, but it is also home to some of the best dog friendly spots in the country. Fistral Beach is a vibrant, energetic stretch of sand that pups absolutely adore.

  • Dog Restrictions: Fistral is fully dog friendly all year round. Whether it is the height of summer or a brisk winter morning, dogs are always welcome.
  • Best Time to Go: Aim for low tide. Not only does this give your dog maximum running space, but it also helps you avoid the busiest midday surfer crowds during the summer months.
  • Car Park: Fistral Beach Car Park, Headland Rd, Newquay, TR7 1HY.
  • Nearby Facilities: The beach complex has several dog friendly options. Rick Stein’s Fistral and The Fish House both offer great food with dog friendly outdoor seating. For a scenic extension to your walk, head up the coastal path to the Pentire Headland for sweeping views of the Atlantic.

5. Saunton Sands, Devon

Rounding off our list is the magnificent Saunton Sands in North Devon. Featuring three miles of golden sand and rolling waves, it is a brilliant destination for families and their four-legged friends.

  • Dog Restrictions: Dogs are allowed 365 days a year. However, there is a small restriction: dogs must be kept on a lead for the first five minutes of the walk past the beach hut area. Once you pass the designated sign, the rest of the three-mile stretch is entirely off-lead.
  • Best Time to Go: Early evening during the summer. It is incredibly popular with holidaymakers during the day, so an evening visit gives your dog plenty of space to run freely.
  • Car Park: Saunton Beach Car Park, Saunton, Braunton, EX33 1LQ.
  • Nearby Facilities: Saunton Break Cafe, located right on the edge of the beach, is incredibly dog friendly. After a run on the sand, you can also explore the Braunton Burrow the largest sand dune system in England.

Fuel Their Adventures

Exploring a glorious dog friendly beach takes a lot of energy. Whether your pup is sprinting through the surf in Devon or navigating the dunes in Norfolk, they need top-quality nutrition to keep them going.

Next time you pack up the car for a trip to the coast, make sure you have your towels, plenty of fresh drinking water, and a bag of COYA Pet to keep their tails wagging all the way home.
